Passengers Must Pay Extra Charges for Excess Luggage in Trains

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has clarified in the Lok Sabha that passengers travelling by train must pay additional charges if they carry luggage beyond the free allowance set by Indian Railways.

Key points explained by the Railway Minister:

  • Indian Railways has fixed class-wise rules for carrying luggage in train compartments.

  • Passengers can carry luggage free of cost only up to the prescribed limit for their travel class.

  • Luggage beyond the free allowance is permitted only after paying extra charges.

  • The maximum luggage limit includes the free allowance.

Class-wise free luggage allowance and maximum limits:

  • Second Class passengers

    • Free allowance: 35 kg

    • Maximum limit: 70 kg (chargeable)

  • Sleeper Class passengers

    • Free allowance: 40 kg

    • Maximum limit: 80 kg (chargeable)

  • AC 3 Tier and Chair Car passengers

    • Free allowance: 40 kg

    • Maximum limit: 40 kg

  • First Class and AC 2 Tier passengers

    • Free allowance: 50 kg

    • Maximum limit: 100 kg (chargeable)

  • AC First Class passengers

    • Free allowance: 70 kg

    • Maximum limit: 150 kg (chargeable)

Charges for excess luggage:

  • Passengers can carry luggage beyond the free allowance up to the maximum limit by paying extra charges.

  • The charge for excess luggage is 1.5 times the standard luggage rate.

Size limits for personal luggage:

  • Trunks, suitcases, and boxes up to 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm are allowed inside passenger compartments.

  • If any one of the dimensions exceeds the limit, the luggage must be booked and carried in the brake van or parcel van.

Other important rules:

  • Commercial or merchandise items are not allowed as personal luggage in passenger compartments.

  • Luggage exceeding the prescribed limit must be booked and transported in the brake van of the train.
