Union Budget 2025: Key TDS Rule Changes Effective from April 1
The Union Budget 2025 has introduced significant changes to Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rules, set to take effect from April 1, 2025. These updates aim to provide financial relief to senior citizens, depositors, investors, and commission earners.
Here’s a breakdown of the major changes:
1. Higher TDS Threshold for Senior Citizens
To benefit senior citizens, the government has doubled the TDS threshold on interest income. Starting April 1, 2025, banks will deduct TDS only if a senior citizen’s total interest income exceeds ₹1 lakh per financial year.
This means if their interest earnings from fixed deposits (FDs), recurring deposits (RDs), or other savings instruments stay within ₹1 lakh, no TDS will be deducted.
2. Higher TDS Limit for General Citizens
For other depositors, the TDS threshold on interest income has been raised from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000. If total interest earnings remain within ₹50,000, no TDS will be deducted. This change will benefit individuals who rely on FD interest as a source of income.
3. Revised TDS Rules on Lottery Winnings
Previously, TDS was deducted if total lottery winnings in a year exceeded ₹10,000, even if received in smaller amounts. Now, TDS will be deducted only if a single transaction exceeds ₹10,000.
4. Higher TDS Limit for Insurance Commission Earners
Insurance agents and brokers will see some relief, as the TDS threshold for insurance commissions has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. This change will help them retain more of their earnings.
5. Increased TDS Exemption for Mutual Funds and Stocks
Investors in mutual funds and stocks will now benefit from a higher TDS exemption on dividend income. The threshold has been raised from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, allowing investors to keep more of their earnings.
Final Thoughts
These updates aim to reduce the tax burden on depositors, investors, and commission earners while simplifying the tax deduction process. With these new thresholds, individuals can enjoy higher tax-free earnings on their savings and investments.
Keep these changes in mind as you plan your finances for the next financial year.

How to Set UPI PIN Without a Debit Card: A Step-by-Step Guide
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has made digital transactions seamless, but setting a UPI PIN usually requires a debit card. However, if you don’t have one, you can still set your UPI PIN using alternative methods. Here’s how you can do it.
Method 1: Using Aadhaar Card
-
Download and Open the UPI App
Install a UPI-enabled app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM and open it.
-
Select Your Bank
Choose your bank from the list. Ensure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and bank account is active.
-
Choose Aadhaar-Based Authentication
Some banks allow UPI PIN setup using an Aadhaar-linked account. If available, select this option instead of a debit card.
-
Enter Aadhaar Details
Enter the last six digits of your Aadhaar number and verify via OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
-
Set Your UPI PIN
Once authenticated, create a new UPI PIN and confirm it.
Method 2: Contacting Your Bank
If your bank does not support Aadhaar-based authentication, you can visit your bank branch and request UPI PIN setup assistance. Some banks allow PIN generation through mobile banking apps or customer support.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Ensure your mobile number is linked to both your bank account and Aadhaar.
- Not all banks support Aadhaar-based UPI PIN setup. Check with your bank for eligibility.
- Keep your UPI PIN confidential and do not share it with anyone.
By following these steps, you can set your UPI PIN without a debit card and enjoy seamless digital transactions.
However, for every UPI transaction, one must enter a four or six-digit UPI PIN, which verifies that the payment is being made by the rightful user. Traditionally, a debit card has been used to set this PIN, but now there is another option — an Aadhaar card.

UPI Lite users can now enjoy more flexibility with their funds. In a significant update, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has mandated all banks, payment service providers (PSPs), and UPI Lite-enabled apps to introduce the “Transfer Out” feature by March 31, 2025. This means users will no longer need to disable UPI Lite to withdraw their balance.
What’s Changing for UPI Lite Users?
Previously, users could only add money to their UPI Lite wallet but had no option to transfer it back to their bank account. If they wanted to retrieve their funds, they had to disable UPI Lite, after which the remaining balance was automatically credited to their account.

Additional Security and Updates in UPI Lite
To enhance user experience and security, NPCI has implemented several improvements:
- Balance Verification: Banks will now match the Lite Reference Number (LRN) balance with NPCI data to ensure accuracy.
- Enhanced Security: UPI Lite apps will require an app passcode, biometric authentication, or pattern lock to prevent unauthorized access.
- More Flexibility: Users can manage their funds efficiently and transfer their balance back to their main UPI account whenever needed.
How to Activate UPI Lite
Activating UPI Lite is a simple process:
- Open your UPI app on your smartphone.
- Select the “Enable UPI Lite” option.
- Accept the terms and conditions.
- Enter the amount you want to add to your UPI Lite wallet.
- Make the payment from your linked bank account.
- Authenticate the transaction with your UPI PIN.
Once activated, UPI Lite allows users to make small payments without entering a UPI PIN, making transactions faster and more seamless.
Stay Updated and Enjoy the Benefits
With the introduction of the “Transfer Out” feature, UPI Lite has become more user-friendly, secure, and convenient. Users now have full control over their funds while continuing to enjoy quick and hassle-free small transactions.

Should You Use UPI with a Credit Line? Pros and Cons Explained
A credit card has become an essential tool for making online payments, offering both convenience and valuable rewards such as cashback and discounts. However, while credit cards remain popular, UPI transactions are growing at an even faster pace. According to the latest RBI data, UPI payments reached ₹2.34 lakh crore in October 2024, marking a 37% increase in just one year.
Now, imagine combining the benefits of UPI with a credit line. This means you can make UPI payments while enjoying the flexibility of credit, much like having a UPI service linked directly to your credit card. But is this a smart financial move? Let’s explore the key advantages and disadvantages.
Key Advantages of Using UPI with a Credit Line
-
Access to Credit Anytime
Unlike traditional UPI payments that deduct money directly from a savings account, using a credit line allows you to make transactions without an immediate cash outflow. This gives you greater flexibility to manage expenses, especially during times of financial crunch.
-
A Cleaner Bank Statement
When you make frequent UPI payments through your bank account, every transaction appears in your statement, making it cluttered. However, if those payments go through a credit card, your bank statement will only reflect a single payment toward the credit card bill, making it easier to track and manage your finances.
-
Better Financial Management
Many people use UPI for small transactions and credit cards for larger expenses. By combining both into one payment method, you streamline your financial transactions, making it easier to monitor spending and manage cash flow efficiently.
While this system offers several advantages, it also comes with potential downsides. Interest charges, overspending risks, and the need for disciplined repayment should be carefully considered before opting for a UPI-linked credit line.
Would you consider using a credit line for UPI payments? Understanding both the benefits and risks can help you make the right financial decision.
Key Disadvantages to Keep in Mind
Using a credit card offers convenience, but it also comes with certain risks. Here are some key drawbacks to consider:
1. Risk of Overspending
Having access to a credit line can make it tempting to overspend. Since the money isn’t deducted from your bank account immediately, it’s easy to lose track of your budget. Relying too much on your credit card for both small and large expenses can lead to financial strain if not managed carefully.
2. Dependency on a Single Payment Method
Technology has made digital transactions effortless, but relying too much on one payment method can be risky. If there’s a technical glitch, payment failures can cause unnecessary stress and inconvenience. Diversifying your payment methods—such as using a mix of UPI, debit cards, and net banking—can help prevent disruptions.
3. Missing Out on Rewards and Perks
Credit Card to UPI Not all credit cards come with the same benefits. Some may not support UPI payments, while others offer exclusive perks like cashback, discounts, or access to premium experiences such as golf events or luxury lounges. If you stick to just one card for convenience, you might miss out on rewards that other cards offer.
While credit cards provide flexibility, responsible usage is key to avoiding financial pitfalls. Managing expenses wisely and exploring multiple payment options can help you maximize benefits while minimizing risks.
